| Amsterdam has approx. 735.000
inhabitants, making it the largest city in the
Netherlands – not surprising then that it is
also the capital city. Amsterdam was officially
awarded city rights in the year 1300. Since then,
the city has grown consistently. In particular,
Amsterdam enjoyed its glory years in the 17th
century: the city enjoyed rapid growth, and the
canals (grachten) were constructed in a ring
formation around the city, with beautiful houses
built along their banks. Fortunes were made in
Amsterdam, and this financial strength led to more
successes. Many of Amsterdam’s impressive
churches and palaces date from this time.
