Museums
Amsterdam’s
museums attract thousands of visitors each year.
Out of all the museums (there are over 30) the
largest and best-known are the van Gogh, the
Stedelijk (City) museum and the Rijksmuseum
(National Museum). This winter Amsterdam will be
organising a Winter Adventure again: this means
that once again there will be many exhibitions to
choose from, including one about royal weddings in
the New Church (Nieuwekerk), een museumnacht
(Musuem Night) when a large number of museums stay
open until 2am, and Rembrand’s House (rembrandhuis)
will be focusing on Rembrand’s early years. To

The National Museum

The
National Museum is housed in a monumental
building. Designed by the architect Cuypers, it is
the largest museum of art and history in the whole
of the Netherlands. The heart of the museum’s
internationally prized collection is works of art
from the Dutch Golden Age, with twenty paintings
by Rembrandt,
four by Vermeer and numerous other paintings from
artists such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen. The
striking centrepiece of the museum is Rembrandts
Nachtwacht.

This
fabulous museum is not to be missed during your
stay in Amsterdam. Set up by a French sculpturess
who opened her first waxworks museum in London,
the Amsterdam museum features a number of very
well known stars: Nelson Mandela, Tina Turner,
Vincent Van Gogh, Marilyn Monroe, Herman Brood and
Wim Kok (to name but a few) have been recreated in
a remarkable way. The museum is located right next
to Dam Square.
Naval museum

In
this museum you will find a large collection of
old and new model ships, navigation instruments,
weapons and globes from throughout the ages of
Dutch naval history. The building (surrounded by
water) was previously used as a warehouse by the
Dutch navy. The museum is 15 min on foot from the
central station, and if you don’t feel like
walking,
you can get the bus numbers 22 or 32.
Address Kattenburgerplein1.
